The City of Casey could get its first data centre, with a planning application lodged for a major site in Clyde North.

The application seeks approval for the use and staged development of a data centre facility at 585 Berwick-Cranbourne Road in Clyde North.

The proposal was lodged to City of Casey on 20 April., and the Council is yet to make a decision on the application.

The development cost is estimated to be more than $1.1 billion.

Data centres are secure facilities filled with computer servers and other equipment used to store, manage and process digital information.

They also require extensive electricity, cooling systems and telecommunications connections.

The Clyde North proposal is believed to be the first planning application for a data centre within the City of Casey.

The site covers about 53.6 hectares on the south-west corner of Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road.

About 41.2 hectares of the property was previously identified as developable land.

The property was bought by Galileo Group for $130 million in November 2022.

The site forms part of the Croskell Employment Precinct, a planned industrial and commercial area between Thompsons Road, Berwick-Cranbourne Road and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road.

The State Government approved its Precinct Structure Plan on 13 March this year, just over a month before the data centre application was lodged.

The wider precinct covers about 317 hectares and is intended to provide new employment and industrial land in the rapidly growing south east.

The data centre proposal marks one of the first major development applications to emerge since the Croskell plan was approved.

The permit application PA26-0190 has received about 5 objections.
